Getting a GP (fastlege) in Norway via Helsenorge

Last updated

Everyone resident in Norway has the right to one regular general practitioner (fastlege) in their municipality, and everyone in Norway is entitled to emergency healthcare (Ny i Norge).

How to choose a GP

  1. Get your ID number and an electronic ID (BankID, MinID or Buypass).
  2. Go to Helsenorge's "Bytte fastlege" service. You can search for GPs with free places without logging in. To actually switch, you log in. The service is in Norwegian only.
  3. Pick a GP with vacancies, or join a waiting list.

The rules

  • You can change GP twice per calendar year. You can also change if you report a change of address to the National Registry, or if your GP leaves or cuts their list.
  • You can choose a GP in another municipality than the one you live in.
  • You can be on one waiting list at a time. When a place opens, the change takes effect automatically from the first day of the next month, and Helfo sends a letter to confirm it.
  • After switching you get a receipt in your Helsenorge inbox.
  • Parents can change GP for their own children under 16.
