Sending money to and from Norway (and bringing cash)

You'll want a Norwegian account

Most shops accept international cards, but to receive salary, pay bills and use Vipps you need a Norwegian bank account – which in turn needs a D number or national ID number. See opening a bank account.

Bringing cash: the NOK 25,000 rule

If you carry cash or other means of payment (notes, coins, gift cards) worth more than NOK 25,000 into or out of Norway, you must declare it to Norwegian Customs (Tolletaten):

• Fill in form RD-0026 in two copies before crossing the border.
• Arriving: use the red channel and hand in both copies.
• There is no tax on the amount, but failing to declare means a penalty of 20% of the entire amount (e.g. NOK 5,200 on NOK 26,000) or a police report.

International transfers

Before your Norwegian account is ready, compare the total cost of a transfer: the fee and the exchange rate used. Options include your home bank, your new Norwegian bank, and online transfer services.
