Winter in Norway for beginners: saunas and cold-water bathing

Winter bathing combined with sauna has become a popular pastime in Norway, as the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) puts it, "with saunas popping up all over Norway". Shared public sauna sessions are an easy, social way to get through the dark months.

Beginner rules for cold water (from DNT)

• The "rule of twos" for beginners: no longer than 2 minutes, no more than 2 times a week, always at least 2 people together.
• Start gently – one dip a week is a good start; some people get used to it with cold showers first.
• Breathe: take two or three deep breaths before, and enter the water on a long exhale.
• Keep hands above the water; wool socks inside bathing shoes help.
• After a long cold dip or if you're very chilled, don't go straight into a hot sauna – warm up gradually (risk of "afterdrop", dizziness).
• Check with your doctor first if you are ill, have high blood pressure, heart conditions, cold allergy, Raynaud's, open wounds, or are pregnant.

What to bring

Swimwear, towel, bathing shoes, warm loose clothes that are easy to put back on. Some operators rent towels (City Sauna in Bergen charges NOK 80 for a forgotten towel).
