Your first week in Norway: printable checklist

Last updated

Before you travel

  • Carrying more than NOK 25,000 in cash? Fill in customs form RD-0026 (details).
  • Non-EU/EEA: residence permit in place if staying over 90 days or working (step 2).
  • Bring your passport/national ID – you'll need it for ID checks, the bank and BankID.

Week one

  • EU/EEA staying 3+ months: apply via udi.no, then book a police appointment through My Applications to get your registration certificate (step 2).
  • Working? Apply for a tax deduction card – this is how many people get a D number (step 3).
  • Book an ID check with the Tax Administration if asked (step 1).
  • Staying 6+ months: register your move to Norway (step 2).
  • Get a prepaid SIM to start (step 7).
  • Download Entur or your local ticket app (Ruter, Skyss, Kolumbus) (step 12).
  • Moved into a flat? Transfer the electricity contract to your name (step 9).

As soon as you have your number

  • Order MinID (activation letter by post) or a Buypass ID (step 4).
  • Open a bank account (step 5), then get BankID (step 6).
  • Order fibre early – installation can take weeks (step 8).
  • Ask your municipality about a GP and Norwegian classes (step 10, learning Norwegian).

Order matters: ID number → bank account → BankID. Full checklist: /settle/
